Global IT spending surges in 2010

The global IT market staged a healthy comeback last year, with expenditure on IT products and services rising 8 per cent from 2009 to more than USD 1.5 trillion, according to market research firm IDC's Worldwide Black Book report released on Wednesday. The market research firm's 2010 report indicated that the IT industry registered its fastest growth rate since 2007 during the year gone by. Global spending on information technology was driven by pent-up demand for hardware upgrades and infrastructure investment after the financial crisis and global recession of 2009, as per the report. Factoring in the telecommunications segment, the overall ICT (information and communications technology) market saw spending climb to almost USD 3 trillion, up 6 per cent from 2009. Growth was driven by the need and ability of businesses to spend money to refresh their hardware and invest in technology infrastructure, according to the IDC.

"Like the global economy, the global IT industry performed better than expected in 2010," Stephen Minton, the Vice-President of IDC's IT markets and strategies group, said in a statement. "With business profits and stock markets back into a cycle of growth, many organisations took the opportunity to make up for lost time by upgrading mission critical systems and infrastructure over the course of the year." IDC found that demand for new hardware drove the rebound in 2010, as spending on computers, peripherals, storage technology, mobile devices and network equipment rose by 16 per cent to more than USD 661 billion, the fastest growth rate for hardware since 1996.

Breaking down the results, spending on storage products alone grew by 14 per cent, spending on servers by 9 per cent and spending on PCs by 11 per cent. Spending on software, though not as robust, also rose by 4 per cent, while spending on IT services grew by 2 per cent. IT spending in the US rose by 6 per cent last year and should grow by another 5 per cent in 2011, as per the report. Developing economies were the force behind much of the growth in 2010 and should continue to be so in 2011. Not counting Japan, the Asia/Pacific region's IT market climbed by 13 per cent last year and is expected to register a 10 per cent increase this year. IDC is also looking for double-digit growth from Central and Eastern Europe, Latin America and the Middle East and Africa. IT spending in more developed economies, such as Western Europe, Japan, and Canada, will grow, but at slower rates, IDC said.

What's new in OpenERP 6.0 Payroll module ?

?After a small break I am back to show some of the interesting features of OpenERP 6.0. In this blog I am going to explain how you can configure and use the payroll efficiently which is also integrated to the holiday management and accountings. The major changes in payroll module are, you can use this module without installing the accounting module. The dependency to the account module is removed in the 6.0 which was there in the version 5.0. So, there are two different module hr_payroll and hr_payroll_account.

Lets install the payroll module, follow the steps described below.

Lets start with the Configuration

Payroll Configuration

Payroll configuration is very easy, there are two important objects that we have to configure to run the payroll calculations and other computations. First and most important object is Salary Heads, which is used to define the major heads of salary.

Salary Heads - HRA Configuration

Look at the detailed configuration for the head Provident Fund, where we have to configure the company contributions on the head. You can define the list of contributions and associated register. Using contribution register you can track the contribution of the employee and company.

The most important configuration in salary heads are the fields named 'code', 'based on' and 'sequence', all codes becomes variable so that you can use these all variables in calculating the base amount for any other salary heads, all used variables in calculations should required to have more priority. Lets take an example normally in India some allowances like house rent allowance (it is in % and not fix) is based on the basic + da so you can configure in this way, Based on house rent allowance could be basic + da, where basic is the predefined variable and da is the code of Dearness Allowance head.

Some of the example to construct the base : (basic + da) / 5 * hra

So, Here we finished the configuration of the salary heads. Lets see how to define the salary structure, normally salary structure is nothing but the breakup of the salary in terms of allowances and deductions so that some of the allowances and deductions employee can claim for saving the tax. Again salary structure definition is based on the company policy and employee's grades or pay scale.

Now, you must be thinking that if this is the fix structure for the marketing executive then where to configure the incentive on sales or special allowances based on the contract ?, There is a way that you can add the special configuration in the employee where you can define the special allowance and deductions for the specific employees. Lets see how to configure the employee special request to deduct the 500 Rs of tax every month.

Look at the Salary structure report, its improved a lot, so now you can see the employee's basic salary, gross salary and Net salary, also you can see the list of allowance and deductions with the total amount.

Now finally we have to link the salary structure to the employee contract, where we have to define the employee's wages details and breakup in terms of the salary structure.

Every month hr manager have to prepare a salary register form the Payroll Register menu. Just open form and configure few things like Name of the Register, and Bank details, and press the compute button. It will compute the salary slip for all employees.

Once you go through all the verification procedures like HR Check, Account Check you will get the Payment advice created under the Payment Advice Menu. You just have to type the required message, cheque numbers in side that advice and you can directly give this for the salary payment along with the pay order / cheques.

So, this is very small introduction about the OpenERP 6.0 Payroll module. The major change in the OpenERP 6.0 payroll module is it won't install the accounting if you just want to run the payroll without accounting. If you wanted to do the integrated accounting then install the module hr_payroll_account. May be in my next post I will try to make complete video for the payroll processing.

XML-RPC can be used with Python, Java, Perl, PHP, C, C++, Ruby, Microsoft’s .NET and many other programming languages. Implementations are widely available for platforms such as Unix, Linux, Windows and the Macintosh.

You can download the xml-rpc library from apache, and test the following code to do the login, create, write read, search, I will test and put the correct syntax for the rest of the service like wizard workflow and report. currently i have tested this library for the common and object service only.

Usability - Its not a matter of Look and Feel

Look and Feel is one of the important factor in the software to attract people. OpenERP is one of the best management software now looking forward to the most important issue that is faced by majority softwares now a days and that is Usability of softwares. In the version 5.0 there ware many changes made compared to the version 4.2 and version 4.0.

Version 5.0 came up with the biggest changes in the view that was implementation of the search view where we have the primary search fields select="1" and extended search fields by select="2".

Second major change was in the form view, which was the six columns view on the top of the form instead of the normal 4.0's tabbed page form.

Now finally in the upcoming OpenERP Version 6.0 we all are exiting about the new look. Usability is one of the important factor which is being handled by Aline Preillon. Lets see the new Search view and the Form view of partner.

Form view in OpenERP 6.0 - Its not having big changes, but yes of course some of the widgets seems to be improved a lot. For example, One2Many widget has now having the paging facility, also we can edit and create a record in the Many2Many widget.

By looking at all above screens, we can easily identify the differences in version 6.0 compared to versions 4.0 or 5.0.

Define your own customer Search View

Version 6.0 has done twice improvement in the user friendliness. The new type of view is introduced in version 6.0 from which we can define our own custom search view for any form. These are on the fly discussion about the OpenERP Usability. Lets see in the detail what OpenERP mean by the Usability.

Usability In Installation

Installation process is one more important factor in any software. Easy and assistive installation steps can make software easily understandable and usable. OpenERP makes it very easy with few click installation steps which allows user to install the software easily and according to their needs. Correct ordering of the installation steps can give the required information at desired place. Look at some of the wizard steps from the Version 5.0.

First Step : Single click module selection

The configuration wizard will be launched after installation. This wizard depended on the installed modules, and asked for more customization in it. Look at the account configuration wizard which ask for the accounting configurations.

OpenERP have stared to think on it since version 4.0. In version 5.0 it came up with the best idea that allows user to place their configuration wizard after installing or upgrading the modules.

Usability in modularity of OpenERP

OpenERP is famous for its modularity approach. It can easily fit in small organizations, also allows user to expand their business with the lower expansion cost for management software(OpenERP). Version 6.0 seems to be more focused in the same area and the major changes we ever saw in the older versions, are going to be delivered in version 6.0. The major inter-module dependency is removed now. OpenERP will allow users to install application with the limited dependent modules. For example, Sale module will not ask mrp module to install, which was the biggest dependency in the older versions. Look at the module dependency graph below.

Now, OpenERP will act as a Business Application rather then ERP for specific business verticals. Look at the new menu structure which is specially designed to meet the Individual Application like Sales, Purchase, Stock, Accounts, Human Resource, Etc..

OpenERP is doing lots of Improvement from the usability point of view. There is a small but good improvement in the reports that is allows to print the currency symbol on the report.

You have seen the simplicity of the Sales Receipt, and Sales Payment in my last two videos. It is very easy to working with the Vouchers. Manual and Automatic reconciliation are the ways to manage the periodical reconciliation process. We have also a way to manage bank reconciliation using Bank Statements. In all the cases we have to take care in the reconciliation process that we have to match the correspondence entries to reconcile. Hiding database name on login

It’s important to be able to hide database names from login screen for security purpose, the users who are known with Database names can login, for others database name is not accessible.

Now this enhancement is implemented in trunk server and client,

We have an option –list_db on the openobject server to disable the list of Databases,

Run server like:

./openerp-server.py –addons-path=../../../addons/ –list_db=False

If the option has value “False” it will provide a char field instead of having a selection box for the Databases, Or the user can specify database name manually:

If the database does not exist, it will raise and error:

After the first connexion, the DB name is stored on the ~/.openerprc and on the next login, the char field will be filled with the last database name connected.

The selection list is also removed from “Drop Database” and “Backup Database”

To summarize, –list_db=False option on OpenERP server lets us to hide all databases names from client…

You can start sa-server using –engine option,

PORT : Port on which mysql server is running (By Default : 3306)

New Action for ‘Submenu’, fields_view_get API change

Hello,

There is new feature added on gtk client (will available in etiny soon) for submenu.

Now user can have submenus on the top of the form view (inside the tab).For this there is one new action type (ir.actions.submenu) defined on ir.actions.act_window, which allow user to make different submenus on one form:

As shown in below example in form view for project, user can manage all information (Tasks,Timesheet,Bugs,…Dashboard) of project from a single point of view and navigate easily for each links available for the project!

Hello,

Here is the feedback of the last month's work.

1.Report Engine :
Open ERP Report Engine has added new type of report called mako2html to parse HTML reports using MAKO template for faster and formatted output. See more detail : http://openerp-team.blogspot.com/2009/05/faster-formating-of-html-reports-using.html

2.Multi-Company :
Now User can directly change the company without having to log out, directly by going through the user preferences. and also Current company is displayed on status bar.

3.Google MAP in Open ERP :
We can see our partner information on google map(name, code, address,...) with icon on map.
Display country wise Partner Turnover, country appears in different colors like
light red color => high turnover
dark red color => low turnover

*After click on Reminder button in case form, Window will be display message "Email Successfully sent !" if mail successfully sent
*Improve openerp-mailgate.py to accept html body

6.Base Quality module :
This module has been reviewed and should now be more accurate and more usable. As reminder, the base quality module allow you to check the quality of a module using different criteria (pylint, speed efficiency, coding standard followed by openepr, etl...).

It evaluates score in percentage (%) for whole module as well as it can provide score for individual tests, also it can skip some tests if module is not installed in server (workflow test...) so that your score is not bad for no reason.
Use Ponderation value to calculate score. It allows you to save the result of test (Save Report button)
Module also provide generic framework to define your own quality test.

7.Document modules :

document_rules :
Document Rule module is mainly developed for creating rules on documents.
There are four types of rules which are defined in server actions: To copy document, To move document, To Assign partner to a document and To assign user to a document.
These rules are fired when rules criteria match on the basis of time defined in the scheduler.

document_extention :
Document extension module keeps track of versioning of documents.
Any change is made to the document and saved then it creates version of that document and the versioned document gets locked. The user cannot modify the document if it is versioned.

8.Usability Improvement :

*Make Partner Category structure view, Products Categories structure view, Analytical Account Structure View same like Stock Locations Structure view
*Rename “Administration > Security > Grant Access to Menus” into "... / Manage Menus"
*Change Order of menus in Product menu. Before, It was like this: Configuration,

Here are few enhancements, improvements and bugfixing have been done on thunderbird plugin.

* If the thunderbird plugin is not installed or if it's not correctly configured, the proper error message will appear.
* Restructure module addons-extra/thunderbird
* When you want to archive a mail containing an attachment, it opens a window saying "Mail contains attachment!". This window is not useful so removed.
* Rename "Create" button on the bottom left corner to "Create Contact".
* When you archive an email with attachments, it asks Would you like to also save attachments of the email:
- Cancel (don't save anything)
- No (create case only)
- Yes (create case + attachments)
* If it's linked to a partner or address, it will fill in the partner and/or address when it creates a case.
* We have two buttons to archive from the archive window:
* Create Case (the current action)
* Attach (don't create a case but save the email as a normal .eml
file + his attachments, on the selected object). -> this one does not need a section.
* Select all model and search.
* Reviewed all dialogue window. It will ask for Cancel and Ok at the right in each window.
* We have found few bugs and enhancements at the time of testing. We will fix it soon.

Features :
Module to add any TrueType font to reports. This module transparently extends the report machinery to use TrueType fonts. The normal mechanisms used in Open ERP use the standard Type1 fonts in a latin1 encoding. This prevents usage of wide char character sets, known as UTF-8 and UTF-16 fonts.
This module enables the usage of any TrueType font, which are by definition UTF-8 encoded. The implementation chosen is a one-time registration of all found TrueType fonts in locations as advertised by rl_config.TTFontSearchPath during startup of the server. The path can be adapted to your needs. See reportlab's documentation for the details.
The consequence of this implementation is that new fonts will only be loaded after restarting the Open ERP server. Advantage is that the penalty for scanning and registering is paid only once every server run.
After loading, all reports generated by Open ERP can use these fonts by stating their formal mapped Type1 name, which can be found by running 'ttmkfdir' in the directory containing the fonts (unix like platforms). The typefaces will be listed in the file 'fonts.scale'.

TODO:
* One should be able to replace existing fonts using a map.
* One should know the registered fonts without peeking into the file system, let alone using rare utils.

Commiting in Launchpad: Guidelines

Hello,

This message is for all Open ERP contributors, to depict our new policy in terms of commit and bugfixes into Launchpad. As you are directly concerned, read carefully the following 4 points and don't hesitate to give feedback!

1. The stable branch must be used for bugfixes only. The new features (+the bugfixes on these new functionalities) have to be done in the trunk branch. Note that, we will backport periodically all the fixes from stable to trunk.

2. Always set the author's name, if it's different from the person who has committed. I heard that some contributors have seen their work has been commited without mentioning their name in the commit message: this is not acceptable at all.

We have to show respect for them and for their work, so please use --author="<author_name>" when merging work or patching features from community.

e.g: bzr commit --author="<author_name>"

3. Format to commit message :

* Use header in each commit message. Header should be out of these: [IMP], [FIX], [REF], [ADD], [REM]

[IMP] : For improvements

[FIX] : For bug fixes

[REF] : For refactoring (improvements of the source code, without changing the functionalities or behaviours. See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Refactoring for further details)

[ADD] : For adding new resources

[REM] : For removing of resources

* Always put meaning full commit message.
Commit message should be self explanatory (long enough) including the name of the module that has been changed. Do not use single words like "bugfix" or "improvements" any-more! (the only single word to commit message accepted is "merge")

* If you are fixing the bugs use --fixes=lp:<bug_number> instead of putting the number of the bug in the commit message.

* Use the revision id instead of the revision number when you make reference to a revision in your commited message. You can get this revision id, by using the command "bzr version-info".

Html Reports Using Mako Templates

Hello Every One,

Now you can create your HTML reports using Mako Templates for faster and formatted output.Open ERP has added new type of report called mako2html.

Mako is a template library written in Python. It provides a familiar, non-XML syntax which compiles into Python modules for maximum performance. This enables end user to make changes in format of report easily and faster as per her need.

Advantages:

1. Fast: simple three-sectioned layout mako template report takes 1.10 ms
2. Control structures constructed from real Python code (i.e. loops, conditionals) Which will allow user to create reports faster.
3. Straight Python blocks, inline or at the module-level

You can format the report as you need using HTML.

Requirements:

Mako 0.2.4 should be installed on your system.

R&D: Planning of May

Here are the main things we plan to work on for the month of May:

1) Planning Management: the new system will allow you to easily plan the work of employees and see, at the end of the planned period,

the ratio between the time spent and the time allocated by projects
the total time planned by tasks

2) Improve the Server Actions: as we found some lack, like the impossibility of using 'uid' as variable, we plan to make some R&D on this interesting feature to make it more powerful.

3) Implement the search function on osv_memory

4) Speed up timesheets: we realized that they were a little slow, so we decided to check the design and improve the speed.

5) Improve Quality Module

6) in CRM, we plan to add info to connect to existing mail server, like Fetchmail, for people that doesn't want or doesn't have the resource to configure the openerp-mailgateway

7) ETL: we have several people full time on this project

8) Multi-Company: we will add a many2many on res_users to depicts the companies for whom the user is working. And we'll also allow someone to directly change the company used currently easily, without having to log out: directly by going through the user preferences + display it in the status bar

9) Clean Translations Process

10) Integration Server: this point is quite a big project, we will start the development of an integration server that will have for aim (examples):

11) Ergonomic Search + List: This is another big task, since we plan to review the design and ergonomy of search/list because The biggest useability/ergonomy concern on Open ERP are:

- no easy way to perform complex search (&, |)
- no way to have smart search:
- My Department's Timesheets to Validate
- My Overpassed Pending Tasks
* The list view:
- quite ugly: no way to group elements:
- tasks by projects or
- by date: Today's Meeting / Tomorrow's Meetings / Others Meetings
- not useful (no way to perform easy actions on records from list view):

- replanning a meeting

If we change these few elements, this will increase a lot the usability and
ergonomy of Open ERP. These changes are planned to be done in GTK and Web client.

R&D: Feedback of April 09

Well in last month, lots of improvements have been done in the trunk version of Open ERP (server and addons). Here are the most important of it.

Reports:

The Open ERP report engine has been completely rewritten from scratch to speed up and streamline the report generation process. It uses the same technologies than the proceeding engine (RML, ODT) and is API compatible.

Compared to the old engine, a 150 page report for sales orders:

Old report engine: 1 Minute 40 Seconds

New Report Engine: 9 seconds

It also uses much less memory as the XML report is not any more in memory during the rendering process. This allows to generate very big reports without troubles (10.000 pages).

All transitions have been reviewed: odt->rml, rml->pdf, rml->html. We also added a new engine for the generation html->html. This modification is so important that it have been backported to branche/5.

Besides, there is now a new type of report supported: HTML2HTML.

Server:

Since v5 of Open ERP, function fields on objects can be defined as being stored in the database with the store attribute. This has considerably speed up the process, because computations of these fields are done when the user write the record and not any more when it reads the record.

We have now added an extra attribute on store, so that is act like a cache system, and re-evaluate this field, not at each record change but every X minutes. That could be very helpful for stock fields for example that will be automatically updated each hours if they are modified. This allows us to speed up some process (like reading a list of products) by 80% !

We now have a better tracability of exported goods, thanks to the module report_intrastat that is reporting detail of intrastat entry base on valid and paid invoices. Business Analysis On Click With Open ERP BI

Hello friends we are happy to announce improvement in our BI (Business Intelligence) module. Now one can easily get analysis on various facts and figures based on Sales, Purchase, Production cycles and more....

We have made it very simple for end user, You can enjoy its functionality with just click of mouse and make the analysis of business data in few seconds. Starting with simple drag and drop, end user can make the simple report, which can be refined with the drills to deep levels and making the complex and detail reports based on business data. Filtering of data can be done with one click allowing end user to filter data according to the need. Reports generated can be seen in the form of graphs and charts too. With every step the MDX query is generated, which can be edited to change the output. Output can be saved as query and can be viewed or can be extended later.

Here is an example of sales data analysis using Open ERP Business Intelligence. In this example one can see how end user can easily configure BI cube and analyse sales data for - product category wise total sale, sale of particular product in particular region, date wise product sale, product sale based on number of unit, further end user can increase criteria for analysis as per need.

Please note that these developments are still a prototype developed on trunk version. It’s fully working but not yet fully integrated in the main branch of Open ERP. We plan to integrate new client developments, like BI and Webmail in the new version of the web client, because this new version will integrate a client side plugin system. So, it’s better to wait for a few months before using the BI system, the v5.2 (or v5.4).

Open ERP Web - What's going on?

Most of you, if following the latest development on Launchpad project area, might be aware of the big changes with Open ERP Web Client. We migrated the web client to CherryPy3 droping the TurboGears completely and migrated Kid templates by faster Mako templates as a major step to make the Web Client much more faster and easier to deploy.

All the Kid templates are converted to faster Mako templates, i18n/l18n features have been partially reimplemented using Python Babel, CherryPy2 (TG is built on top of CP2) was replaced with CherryPy3, the latest, much better version of CherryPy Server.

This greatly reduced the pain of getting started with and deploying of Open ERP Web client. Now the number of third party dependencies are reduced to 3-4 pure Python libraries which you can install within the local lib dir with the help of `populate.sh` script, found under the same lib directory. Just get the source from Launchpad, run the populate.sh and launch the web client...

The initial test results are very impressive. We have seen almost 3-5 time speed improvement. Here are the benchmark results of the latest trunk version against the stable 5.0 branch which is running over TurboGears.

The benchmark test was done using Apache Benchmark Tool against relatively bigger Customer Invoice Form view. The command was used like this:

$ ab -C session_id=$session -n 100 "http://localhost:8080/form/edit?model=account.invoice&id=1"

where $session should be replaced with session id (you can use firebug to see the session id).

Conclusion

You can see significant performance boost in second test result. We observed 3-5 time speedup. There are still room to improve the performance further. Like reducing RPC calls, catching results of some computationally heavy functions. Implementing a way to directly call server methods if web client and server are installed on the same system (completely eliminating TCP layer).

What's next?

Besides this, we also planned to make web client modular implementing plugin system which let you create your own plugins to extend the functionality of the web client. We appreciate your ideas and suggestions in this regards.

Also, we have planned for a better main menu & tabified interface (similar to GTK client) where you always have access to the main menu and all views will be opened in tabs inside the same html page instead of utilising browser tabs. We had discussion about such interface previously, you can search the forum for a very good mockup implementation.

We are also thinking of writing some automated unit tests using CP3 testing API. We already wrote some basic tests to check how to proceed. You can run all tests by launching `run-tests.py` script...

Integration of Open ERP with Google Calender and Google Blogger

Here is a new development from our core technical team, now enjoy functionalities of google calendar and google blogger with Open ERP.

We have developed a module which synchronize Google-Calender events with Open ERP events. So, now get updates of calender schedules from google calendar in Open ERP and vice-versa. Users can change event schedule form any where, with her google calendar which automatically updates Events in Open ERP.

Another development is integration of Google Blogger and Open ERP Task Management, which exports task to blogger and one can get comments on his / her activity on mentioned tasks. A very useful feature of blogger, that is open discussion will be enhanced the development efforts. This feature helps in managing large projects with many tasks and many users working on different task (simultaneously), with this functionality all users can share their progress for the task with others and give their comments for the same.

Hello

Well we are happy to inform you all about successful training session for Open ERP held on 19th to 31st January 09, at Tiny India. It was great knowledge sharing experience with the participants of this training program.

These participants came from different background and expertise, but having one common thing in them i.e. Their willingness to work and grow with Open ERP. Many of them are students pursuing their studies in the field of IT, some of them are freelancer and some of them have their own IT firm. Together they have provided live and interactive training session.

After the training we had their encouraging feedback which boost our confidence and enthusiasm to conduct such cession in future. With this scenario in future we are expecting exponential growth of Open ERP and would like to make more and more people part of this growth story.
